Be prepared when weather cancels your waste service
Did your garbage, recycling, or yard debris service get cancelled during the recent winter weather? Here's how to be in the know and prepared for when weather delays or cancels your service!
While Clark County may not have received as much snow as expected over the last couple of weeks, it was just enough to cause cancellations and delays in garbage, recycling, and yard debris pick-up for some residents - and there could be more to come! Weather-related delays and changes to service can also occur in instances of extreme heat, so it's important to know what to do when your service is delayed or cancelled no matter what time of year it is.
Whether snow and ice or heat creates conditions that make it dangerous for collection to run normal routes on scheduled dates and times, you don't have to guess when your pickup will be. It's easy to sign up for free updates on the services you subscribe to. Here's how:
1. Go to the App Store (Apple), Play Store (Android/Google), or wherever you get apps for your mobile device
2. Search "RecycleRight"
3. Download the "RecycleRight Vancouver ClarkCo" app
4. Open the app and enter your address to view your schedule and sign up to receive service updates including cancellations and delays
Don't use a smartphone or tablet? You can also access service information and sign up for alerts online at RecyclingDoneRight.com and entering your address.
If you receive news that your waste pick-up is cancelled due to inclement weather, take bins off the curb and secure them until your next pick-up. This is particularly important during winter storms and windy conditions, as carts oftentimes get blown over or lids get blown up and off, causing litter to scatter in roads and yards in your neighborhood.
When your service is cancelled, Waste Connections will typically double services on your next scheduled service day. This means twice of the allowable amount of garbage or recycling will be accepted for your next pick-up. If there is a cancellation and you receive weekly services, expect pick-up to occur the next week on your regular service day. If you receive a service every-other-week, expect to receive services two weeks from your regularly scheduled service day. For a more detailed list of cancellations and pick-up dates, visit Waste Connections of Washington's service alerts webpage. You can also follow Waste Connections of Washington on Facebook to view recent posts regarding service alerts.
Additionally, always remember to place carts on the curb at least three feet apart from each other, and at least five feet from cars and other obstacles. Have all containers out by the curb no later than 6:00 am on your service day.
