Green Neighbors Program

The Clark County Green Neighbors Program is coordinated by Clark County Works Solid Waste and Environmental Outreach to assist citizens with developing more sustainable lifestyles and building a strong environmental community in Clark County. Solid waste regional planning and programs are a cooperative effort of Battle Ground, Camas, Clark County, La Center, Ridgefield, Vancouver, Washougal, and Yacolt.

Hands-On Biochar Demonstration Burn

Join us this Saturday for a Biochar Burn Demonstration and Small Acreage Woodland Tour!

Saturday, May 3rd 9:00am-3:00pm at a small acreage residence in Ridgefield, WA.

Clark County, WA – The Small Acreage Program of Clark County Extension is offering a hands-on biochar burn demonstration and small acreage woodland tour led by local biochar and woodland steward, Steve Thalberg. Come take part in making biochar using a Ring of Fire Biochar Kiln, which is ideal for making biochar on your own small acreage with small diameter wood from your own woodland. Biochar is a type of charcoal that is burned at a specific temperature range and with limited oxygen. Terry Koper, Small Acreage Program Coordinator, says, “Biochar has many benefits as a soil amendment, including: retaining moisture; sequestering carbon; and when combined with nutrients, such as compost, it can offer long-term soil fertility improvements.”

The biochar burn setup will begin promptly at 9 am. Join the woodland tour from 1:30pm-2:30pm to learn about best management practices for watershed and small acreage woodland health.

Pre-registration costs $10.00 per person https://biochar2025.bpt.me or walk-ins/drop-ins are welcome for $15 (by cash or check only) per household at 21312 NW 17th Ct. Ridgefield, WA 98642. Students, high school and up, may attend at no cost. This event is not likely safe for those younger than age 15. Scholarships are available. This is an all-day event (9am-3pm). However, you are welcome to take part in the full event or any portion. Dress in protective clothing, cotton is best (no polyester), and bring leather gloves, a mask, eye protection (such as sunglasses). Bring a 5-gallon bucket if you would like to take some biochar home.

This workshop is offered by the Small Acreage Program of WSU Clark County Extension with support from Clark County Public Works Clean Water. The workshop will be led by Steve Thalberg.
